AS Core Mathematics

Why study Core Mathematics
Core Mathematics is a Level 3 Qualification, which is equal in size to an AS, level and graded A-E. It has the same number of UCAS tariff points as an AS Level qualification. Core Mathematics is intended for students who have passed GCSE Mathematics at a grade 5 or higher, but who have not chosen to study A Level Mathematics and wish to continue study Mathematics. The course will be studied over 2 years for 2 hours week.

Entry Requirements
A Grade 5, preferably from sitting the higher paper, is expected in GCSE Mathematics for students considering the Level 3 Certificate in Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).

Higher Education and Careers
Studying Core Mathematics helps students develop their quantitative and problem-solving skills. This is valuable preparation for many degree courses, particularly in subjects such as Psychology, Business-related courses, Sports, Social Sciences, and Natural Science courses that do not require A Level Mathematics.
Universities and employers identified that students who hadn’t studied Mathematics since GCSE often struggle to access the mathematical aspect of courses and employment. Studying Core Mathematics will enable students to maintain the skills learnt at GCSE as well as developing their ability to apply them to real life problems.
