Sociology

Our curriculum intent in Sociology is to give our students the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the world around them and reflect on social issues that are often relevant to their own social experiences. We aim to develop a critical understanding of contemporary social processes and social changes. The curriculum develops a broad set of desirable key skills, including the ability to analyse and formulate clear, logical arguments with scope for extensive evaluation from a range of theoretical perspectives. Developing strong critical thinking skills and being able to consider issues with a global outlook prepares our students for their future paths.

We deliver the curriculum in a logical sequential order. Unit 1 titled ‘Socialisation, Culture and Identity’ introduces students to key concepts and studies that are then revisited in subsequent papers. Unit 2 titled ‘Researching and Understanding Social Inequality’ and Unit 3 titled ‘Debates in Contemporary Society’ both offer synoptic opportunities to build upon prior learning.
