Art

Education through Art and Design inspires creativity, knowledge and appreciation of culture. This in turn enables learners to connect to their world on a deeper level, learning about our cultural histories and creating openings and horizons to new ways of seeing, thinking, doing and being. Our curriculum aims to prepare our pupils for lifelong learning with flexible intelligences and creative verbal and non-verbal communication skills. We aim to encourage learners to discover themselves and their creative voice through a series of taught skills which enable pupils to realise their creative intentions. The curriculum encourages pupils to think critically and imaginatively and fosters an empathetic, inter-cultural understanding and commitment to diversity.  Visual literacy is an essential skill in today’s world and pupils are taught critical analysis skills alongside making in order to produce personal and meaningful work that learners feel proud of. Our department aims to build pupil confidence and self-esteem and we strive at all times to create a safe, positive and accepting space where pupils can be themselves and express themselves through the work that they create.’

The curriculum typically follows a progression that builds upon fundamental skills and concepts whole allowing for more specialisation and depth as students advance.

At Key Stage 3, pupils are introduced to basic art principles and techniques such as Formal Elements in Art, colour theory and analysing and discussing the work of artists.  We explore different media (drawing, painting, printmaking, photography and sculpture) before developing observational drawing skills, hand-eye coordination and fine motor functions.  Pupils also study art history and various artists’ works for inspiration and context to produce art.

As pupils move into Key Stage 4, pupils build upon foundational skills with more focus on technical proficiency. Working independently with previously taught techniques and experimentation with new materials such a lino printing, larger scale ceramic forms, understanding glazes, oil and acrylic painting, etching, digital artwork and photography.   Pupils explore personal expression and develop their own individual artistic style.  We study Art history, theory and critical analysis before preparing for GCSE Component 1 & 2, including responding to a brief and working in controlled conditions.

At Key Stage 5, students specialise in specific mediums or techniques based on student led interests.  Students engage in an advanced study of art theory, history and critique through independent inquiry and experimentation.  Students prepare for A-Levels which includes portfolio development, and exploration of themes or concepts for personal projects.  Students will also take part in mock-interviews in preparation for University or Foundation Degree applications.

Each stage provides a progressive framework that allows students to deepen their understanding of art while also fostering creativity and individual expression.
